Yes, the iPhone brings in new customers, increases revenue, and lets the carrier bask in Apple's halo effect, but all of that comes at a cost. One analyst calls the iPhone a habit the carriers just can't kick.
(Credit: Apple) Apple's iPhone 4S appears to be winning a healthy number of customers from rival mobile platforms. A hefty 36 percent of iPhone 4S buyers said they jumped ship from an Android, BlackBerry, or Palm device, according to a study released yesterday by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). Specifically, 50 percent of the rival phone jumpers polled by CIRP upgraded from a …

iPhone 5 fever is picking up as we inch closer to the Mobile World Congress in Spain in February where many new smartphones are set to debut, including the Samsung Galaxy S3. That's because nothing in the consumer tech world generates as much buzz as new Apple iPads or iPhones.
The Apple iPhone 4S is a hit, if the new numbers from market research firm Nielsen are any indication. During the final three months of 2011, 44.5 percent of respondents purchased an iPhone 4S. That’s up from just 25.1 percent who went with an iPhone in October. This boost in sales helped Apple steal market share from the still-dominant Android during the fourth quarter of 2011.
Apple has released iPod Reset Utility 1.0.3 which is an updated version of the tool that is used to reset iPhone shuffles to their original condition, it’s available via download on Apple.com.
The reset utility can restore first and second generation iPods back to their factory condition, this is good if for some reason iTunes no longer detects your iPod, it does however wipe all the data off your iPod which kinda sucks but ah well. It’s designed to work only on the first and generation iPod shuffles.
Once it has been reset, software version 1.0.4 or 1.0.5 (depending on the generation of your ipod) will be installed onto your iPod and you’ll be good to go again.
Microsoft recently told Fortune magazine that it is looking at developing software for the iPhone.
It was only inevitable that Microsoft would be trying to cash in on the popularity of the iPhone, especially after the release of the iPhone SDK. The iPhone SDK gives Microsoft the opportunity to jump on the millions of people using the iPhone without having to work with Apple, at least directly. The SDK gives Microsoft the ability to produce suites of Office and other applications for the iPhone.

Jason asked me to pen a quick column on Apple rumors, so here goes… Released products are fine, but what about what’s coming out next week, next month or next quarter? Here’s a fun Friday peek into Apple’s labs, skunkworks and dumpsters.
Unlimited music. This rumor has been around since I was walking my pet dinosaur. This go around is courtesy of the Financial Time (via Mac Rumors). Word is that Apple is considering an unlimited music option for iPod and iPhones in which the cost of music is embedded into the cost of the device itself. The all-you-can eat model allegedly being mulled by Apple is different than the music subscription services offered by AOL, Napster, Rhapsody, Virgin and Yahoo where you pay a monthly fee for unlimited downloads and the music expires if you stop paying courtesy of Microsoft’s PlayForSure DRM
3-D display hardware. Imagine Leopard. In 3D. Apple’s patent filing on autostereoscopy display technology could put three-dimensional images visible by multiple users without the need for special headgear or glasses on a Cinema Display near you. Alioscopy is nothing new, NEC already makes a 3D panel. Perhaps this is what’s holding up the new Apple monitors? Shhh, don’t tell my brother, he just bought a Dell 22-inch panel.
Double-sided panels. I’m not much of a flip phone guy, I prefer the candy bar format but according to more Apple patent filings, Apple could be heading in that direction. This latest filing discusses several uses for a “capacitive array element [that] may be a dual-sided panel that is capable of sensing touch from either side.” Suitably vague as usual but either way, a two-sided touch panel sounds pretty sweet to me.
The iPod accessory scene is a billion dollar market. It’s almost to the point that if you can imagine it remotely applying to an iPod in some fashion, it exists. Well, this is the first time we’ve seen iPod underwear.
Available for girls and boys, iBoxers are boxer shorts featuring a pocket for your digital music companion on the front.
Though just six months old, the Apple iPhone is emerging as a major driver of mobile Web consumption, while traditional smartphone users remain focused primarily on e-mail and messaging.
According to the M:Metrics January Benchmark Survey released this week, 85 percent of iPhone users accessed online information that month, compared with 58.2 percent of the wider smartphone market.
Additionally, nearly 60 percent of iPhone users conducted online searches, with just 37 percent of smartphone users accessing Web search.

While demographics of the two user groups are very similar, it’s clear that iPhone owners want online entertainment and social engagement while users of the BlackBerry and other smartphones don’t share the same interests.
It’s not easy being No. 2 when No. 1 is Apple’s line of iPod music and video players. SanDisk, which holds that slot, is aiming its new Sansa Fuze player squarely at the iPod Nano. The Fuze is competing mainly on price.
Like the Nano, the Fuze’s batteries are not replaceable, and the Fuze comes in five colors, compared with Nano’s six, though the Fuze has a deep blue choice that iPod lacks.
The 4-gigabyte Fuze at $100 is $50 less than the Nano of the same capacity. The 8-gigabyte Fuze sells for $130, compared with $200 for the comparable Nano. (A 2-gigabyte Fuze is $80.)
Back when Steve Jobs announced the iPhone SDK, he told excited developers that the only applications Apple wouldn’t be permitting through the AppStore were those illegal or pornographic. Now that some of the dust has settled – and those 100,000+ coders sitting down in front of the SDK! – questions are being asked about just how accurate that statement was. While it’s open-season for mobile entertainment software such as games, productive apps or messenger clients, developers behind services such as Rhapsody or Napster, who would rival Apple’s own iTunes store, are curious to know Steve Jobs stance on them creating programs for the iPhone.
“It’s an open question at this point how amenable Apple will be to offering products or applications that could conceivably interfere with its own iTunes revenue stream. The real interesting test case will be Amazon. Here’s a music vendor selling songs that are clearly compatible with the iPhone. Unlike with Rhapsody or Napster, there’s no DRM you need to make work” Ross Rubin, analyst, NPD Group
It has been reported that Apple are talking to music companies about giving users free access to the entire itunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for the iPod and iPhone devices.
Apple refused to comment on the plan, but Apple reps say talks are currently regarding just how much they would need to charge to allow access to music label’s libraries.
A 17 year old male has been punched and a weapon held to his throat by 2 teenagers who demanded all his cash… AND his ipod.
The 17 year old was waiting at a bus stop near Westfield Shopping Centre at around 7:15PM (AEDT), when a male and a female both ages 18, came up to him and demanded money, the police said.
The female then punched him in the head and demanded that he hand his iPod over, the male then punched him a few times in the face, and then the male put what appeared to be a knife to the victims throat.
He suffered 2 minor cuts to the neck, and had a pair of earphones stolen.
