Apple anounces App Store

08 Mar.

During the recent Apple/iPhone event, Apple announced a brand new application called the “App Store”. The name is pretty self-explanatory, it will allow users to download applications to their iPhone, much like installer.app that has been going around prior to the SDK.

Heres a direct quote from Steve jobs speaking about App Store,

“The App Store is going to be the exclusive way to distribute iPhone applications,” Jobs says. “We think we’ve got a great business deal for developers.” Developer picks the price. Developer gets 70% of the revenues right off the top. We keep 30%. No credit card fees for developers. No hosting fees. No marketing fees. “And it’s paid monthly,” Jobs says. “This is the best deal going to distribute applications in the mobile space.”

More importantly, all these applications can be downloaded free of charge. There are a few limitations in place for App Store such as applications involving porn, bandwidth hogging, malicious and illegal.
